Description: A magnificent 950 grade French silver gravy or sauce ladle in the Renaissance pattern, that carries the marks of 2 of France's greatest silversmiths - Christofle and Cardeilhac. The ladle has a pierced tri-lobe finial, with a smiling cherub's head in the centre, surrounded by very ornate scrolls. the centre of the stem is decorated with a reverse baluster design, and the stem is rectangular, with 90 degree angles. The oval double lipped bowl is connected to the stem with an ornate rat-tail, and the base of the bowl has a channel to allow for easy pouring. The bowl also has a guard over the channel to assist pouring and prevent splashing. Needless to say, the quality and feel of this ladle is fabulous, and it is made of the higher grade 950 silver (as opposed to Sterling which is 925). The Renaissance pattern honours the Renaissance period, and has been described as one of Christofle's most prestigious models, it is entirely hand made in the Haute Orfevrerie workshops in Paris - which produces Christofle's finest silver (Christofle website). It was created in the Nineteenth century in the Neo-Gothic style, this pattern is unique to Christofle. The ladle has 3 hallmarks, all very clear - the first is the Christofle makers mark (diamond punch, 3 stars with bee below, OC for Orfevre Christofle), the second the Cardeilhac makers mark (crowned medal of Honour cross above crescent, in shaped punch), the third is the Christofle 950 grade punch (3 stars above bee, OC, 950). Christofle was founded in Paris in 1830, and today is France's leading producer of silver, with a prestigious customer base (including the Trans Siberian Railway and Orient Express!). Maison Cardeilhac was founded in 1804, and became famous for fine chasing and naturalistic decoration (Napoleon was a customer). They were acquired by Christofle in 1951, so we assume this ladle was made shortly afterwards when both makers marks were still used. In 1990 Christofle re-launched the Renaissance pattern in sterling (925 grade), it is still being made today to order - this particular ladle can be ordered on the Christofle website for Euro 3225. This Renaissance pattern is featured on the front cover of the book "Le Couvert e lu coutellerie de table Francaise du XIX siecle" by David Allan. Note: -The Silver Society Journal No. 37, 2021, published an article entitled "An unpublished Christofle hallmark" by Paul Micio, page 59, explains that after the purchase of Cardeilhac by Christofle in 1951, Christofle called all silver produced between 1954 and 1987 "Collection Cardeilhac", and that all pieces were struck with the Christofle makers mark and the Legion d'honneur Cardeilhac mark, but that this latter mark is in no way a makers mark but simply an additional logo added by the company.
