Description: An interesting Hanau silver circular box, the lid an exact copy of a famous silver Dutch medallion of 1653 by Wouter Muller commemorating the death of Admiral Maarten Tromp. The lid has rich detail, a naval engagement with two Man-of War ships at close range, with an English ship sinking in the foreground, other ships in the background, all in high relief. The inscription around the edge reads :Waarom doet Muller Tromp door kunst van gout en silverleeven: om dat hy'd yzer eew door krygsdeugd heeft verdreven, obyt den. 10 aug: 1653", translated "Why does the art of Muller make Tromp live in gold and silver? Because his valour has removed from us the age of iron. Died 10 August 1653". The circular edge of the box is decorated with putti playing musical instruments, with birds (peacocks and owls), interspersed with blank oval cartouches. The interior is gilded, so it was possibly a snuff box, but could be used on a desk or dressing table for small items (ideal for cufflinks). The base is clearly hallmarked with 3 hallmarks, 13 for 13 loth grade (812 purity), makers mark N in shaped shield for B. Neresheimer & Sons, and a 3rd pineapple mark. These are typical Hanau silver hallmarks, Hanau hallmarks have been described as amongst the "most difficult and confusing area of silver hallmark study", as the marks were never registered and limited records exist. The Hanau silversmiths specialised in antique reproductions, generally of very good quality, so much so they often exhibited at international expositions. Neresheimer & Sohne is undoubtedly amongst the most famous of the Hanau silversmiths working at the end of the 19th century. Maarten Tromp (1597-1653) was Lieutenant-Admiral of the Dutch fleet, and was chiefly responsible for Dutch naval victories in the 17th century, including the destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1639. The battle depicted is the Battle of Texel between the Dutch and English, the final naval battle of the First Anglo Dutch war, the Dutch were attempting to break an English blockade. Tromp was mortally wounded during the battle. His son Cornelis also became a famous Dutch Admiral, to this day the Dutch navy still has a ship named Tromp. The original Dutch medallion can be seen on the Baldwin's website, where it retails for GBP 4500.
