(Barry) Orpen, of Bar Circle Brahmans, in 1961, 1962 and 1964. The first 2 were awarded to "J.D.H. Lady Jake Manso for Champion Brahman Cow/ Heifer", the 1964 was awarded to "Bar Circle 3/61 for Reserve Champion Brahman Cow/ Heifer". All 3 are well preserved in their original boxes, all marked W.A.S. on the lid, one with RMP on interior, the others with SAM interior (Royal Mint Pretoria became South African Mint in 1941, so possibly a replacement box). This medallion is described by Laidlaw as number 0144c (www.southafricanmedals.com, a site we highly recommend)he describes "Obverse: Horse, cow and calf, sheep and pig in a field flanked by sheaths of corn, behind on right, vintage car and steam engine, in the distance mine head works and chimney, radiant sun on the horizon. Legend on a ribbon above: "WITWATERSRAND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY" with two small crosses at the top on each side. At the bottom, corn cobs tied with a ribbon. Reverse: Within a wreath of corn cobs (left) and laurel (right), "AWARDED / TO / FOR" with space for engraving. At the bottom, the South African coat of arms with motto: "EX.UNITATE.VIRES". South African Mint sterling silver marks stamped at the foot: "(lion head) STG 0, Q (for 1962, 1964) S.A.M". Note - the 1961 medallion also has RMP below the coat of arms. Laidlaw also provides the history of the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society and Rand Easter Show: "The Witwatersrand Agricultural Society was instituted 1894 and the fledgling ‘Rand Show’ was opened by Paul Kruger the following year. The shows ceased during the Boer War but recommenced in 1907 with show grounds in Milner Park. This was the venue for the Rand Show until 1984. The Rand Show continues to be held annually during the Easter holidays. The venue has changed and the nature of the exhibition has become oriented towards family entertainment." Barry Orpen of Bar Circle Brahmans was a colourful character, he was one of the first Brahman breeders to import red Brahmans to South Africa for breeding. In 1959 he visited Texas and purchased the American Champion Cow JDH Lady Jake Manso (who won 2 of these medals) (source www.brahmanshop.co.za). Barry Orpen is the son of JH and Eileen Orpen, the Kruger Park Orpen gate and Orpen rest camp is named after them. JH was the park surveyor, he donated boreholes, his wife Eileen bought 7 adjacent farms and donated them to Kruger National Park, extending the park by 24 thousand hectares.
