Description:
Note - The Delft spoon has been sold, only the Amsterdam spoon is available. Price listed is for Amsterdam spoon only. Two 18th century Dutch silver Memorial or Figural spoons, very similar in style so we have grouped them together. Both spoons have figures mounted on pedestals, auricular style triangular handles, rudimentary rat tails and deep gilded spoon bowls (deep lemon colour). The first spoon from Amsterdam has a figure holding a long implement with notches (all suggestions welcome), and has a hole under his arm (possibly a missing piece?). The handle or stem is triangular, with zig zag scratches, the 4 hallmarks grouped on back of bowl at left side are clear (as is usual for Amsterdam spoons of this period). The marks include makers mark JS in oval punch (very clear), for Johannes Selling, date letter V (1780), Dutch purity lion for first grade (934) silver, and Amsterdam town mark. The spoon has a later well struck mark struck in the bowl, the axe or hatchet mark, used between 1853 and 1927 as a tax mark on old Dutch silver items returning to the market. The second spoon from Delft has the figure of a fisherman holding a large fish, his other hand outstretched with circular grip, we assume meant to hold a fishing rod, now missing. The handle appears triangular from the front but has a 4th side, also auricular in style at the base. The back of the bowl has 4 hallmarks struck below the rat tail, and an assay zig zag scrape. It also has engraved initials "IFS over AI IA", we are not sure if these denote owners initials or a religious or historical event. The hallmarks include 2 easily identifiable marks, the Delft city mark, and Dutch purity lion for first grade (934). The second two marks are visible but worn, a Dutch Delft silver expert has now identified the maker as Adriaen Joosten Brandt, makers mark 3 flames, and date 1708. Johannes Selling worked 1763 to 1802, so the Amsterdam spoon is quite late for this style of spoon, commonly produced 1650-1740 (see the book "Klein Zilver" by BWG Wittewaall, page 298, and a similar spoon on the website www.stadszilver.nl, 17th century silver gilt memorial spoon, Amsterdam). Adriaen Brandt worked between 1658 and 1713 (Citroen, Dutch Goldsmith and Silversmith's marks prior to 1812, page 135), his son Cornelis also used the 3 flames makers mark (Brandt is fire in Dutch)
