Description: An Arts & Crafts Canadian sterling silver bowl made by Carl Poul Petersen, Canada's leading 20th century silversmith. The circular bowl is quite large and deep, so probably intended as a fruit bowl, it sits on a cast silver reeded and banded foot. The bowl is planished (hand hammered) both on the interior and exterior, the rim has 8 scalloped sections with a gentle fold, with a small split between each section. The bowl is quite heavy, the quality is very pleasing. The base is engraved "Denise & Sam from Uncle Barney Sept. 2nd. 1962", this is hidden from view by the foot when the bowl is sitting on a table. The bowl is clearly hallmarked, also on the base, "PETERSEN HAND MADE STERLING" between makers mark PP above Viking ship, and the Canadian Lion enclosed in C, the Canadian standard mark used since 1934. Carl Poul Petersen (1895-1977) was a Dane born in Copenhagen, he apprenticed with Georg Jensen at age 13, and was greatly influenced by his master. He married Jensen's daughter Inger, they emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1929 (terrible timing due to the start of the Great Depression). He worked for Henry Birks & Son as master Goldsmith, they produced more traditional styles which must have been difficult for Petersen. He finally opened his own studio in Montral in 1937, only to be interrupted in 1939 by World War II (once again terrible timing). Silver was directed to the war effort, Petersen joined the war effort by manufacturing aluminium and brass filters for Mosquito fighter planes. Post war Petersen's luck finally turned, he received patronage from the Bronfman family (Seagram Distillers), and his 3 sons joined him in the business, producing hand crafted Jensen style Arts & Crafts silver and jewellry, but influenced by Canadian wild life and flora. He became a household name in Canada in 1962 (the year this bowl was made) as he was selected by the NHL (National Hockey League) to engrave, repair and create replica's of the Stanley Cup. Petersen died in 1977, and the business closed in 1979, impacted by the Nelson Bunker Hunt scandal when they manipulated the global price of silver. Today work by Petersen is highly collectable, and is found in many museum collections (National Gallery of Canada, The McCord Museum, Winnipeg Art Gallery and The Museum of Fine Arts in Canada). His work is also featured in the book "Collecting by Design, 20th century silver from Margo Grant Walsh Collection" (a book we highly recommend), we quote "his modern silver pieces advanced the popularity of Scandinavian design in Canada and throughout North America".
